Chosen Independent Study
Catechesis
Chosen: Your Journey Toward Confirmation takes young people on a journey through the entire Catholic faith in all its richness and vitality. Teens will be captivated by the story, from Creation all the way through salvation history, and they will come to see how the sacraments, prayer, and discipleship are the keys to a happy life. The goal of this 24-lesson program is nothing short of winning over the hearts of teens and making them disciples of Christ. The Chosen lessons are accessed through the new digital platform.
Community
This expectation is on hold during Covid restrictions
We have several social events and activities scheduled throughout the year which will offer
opportunities for relationships and friendships to be formed. A candidate should be regularly involved in
our community through a parish ministry such as choir, lectoring, or assisting in a faith formation class.
Service
The primary goal of youth ministry is to help young people to become disciples of Jesus Christ and
cultivate a commitment to a lifetime of service. We hope that our youth will understand the difference
between volunteering and service as ministry to others. The best way to determine if you are doing the
kind of service we need is to ask, "Am I continuing the ministry of Jesus?" Participants are required to
serve at least 20 hours each year but hopefully much more and should be submitted on our website.
Prayer
Through our formation and events, we connect young people to the rich tradition of prayer in our
Church in both personal and communal ways. The source and summit of our approach to prayer is the
Eucharist. Candidates and their families should commit themselves to regular participation in the
Mass to help prepare for confirmation and develop this habit. Whenever possible, they should also
participate in other parish prayer services and sacraments. As in our regular faith formation program,
we expect that candidates participate in a retreat experience once a year. Some examples of this for
independent study might be a high school retreat at another parish, a diocesan Kairos retreat, or a
larger event like NCYC, ND Vision, or YNIA. Virtual Catholic retreats will be accepted during Covid restrictions.
